INTRODUCCTION

The former Hotel Cecil is one of the most popular hotels in Los Angeles in the city and not precisely because of its prestige, but because of the stories that "hide" behind its rooms and surroundings. As is the case of the young Elisa Lam, twenty-one years old, a university student from Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, her mysterious disappearance in 2013 went around the world, there are several theories about the events:

1. Elisa was persecuted by supernatural forces, and she was forced to die?

2. Elisa was mentally ill and had a psychotic episode? We will examine the theories and the possibility that Elisa Lam had bipolar disorder and had a psychotic breakdown that led to her own death.

The Elisa Lam Conspiracy Theories

Elisa Lam, a young traveler discovered in the Cecil Hotel's water tank in 2013, is the subject of The vanishing at the Cecil Hotel. Due to the odd aspects surrounding her case, two conspiracy theories have developed. The first is that Elisa was hounded by otherworldly powers, causing her to die. On the other hand, another idea is that Elisa was mentally sick and died as a result of a psychotic episode.

The first theory is that Elisa was persecuted by supernatural powers. The Los Angeles Police Department released a video showing Elisa on an elevator during the inquiry into her murder ((Surveillance Video of Elisa Lam..). The Elisa Lam case has two elements that lead to the belief that the paranormal is involved. Because hotel staff were unable to reach the roof, the only option to get entry was through a door with an alarm, which would ring when opened, but no noise was heard that night the alarm for the roof top access door was not activated at any point in January or February 2013 (Hsu 2).

Because the water tank hatch is weighty and requires two persons to open, some believe that someone or something was on the roof with her that night. Perhaps Elisa was taken to the roof. After all, they were aware that they were in hiding and that their adversary did not exist in the actual realm. Despite the best efforts of investigators there are no witnesses and no evidence to know how Elisa accessed the roof and water tank (Hsu 8). The last recorded footage of Elisa in the Cecil Hotel elevator adds fuel to the paranormal fires. Elisa's odd conduct prompted others to believe she was playing the elevator game, a Korean urban legend purported to unlock portals to other worlds and summon spirits. All these elements point to Elisa's death being supernatural rather than natural.

The second idea is that Elisa committed suicide as a result of her mental illness. Elisa was diagnosed with bipolar illness and depression, and she was prescribed many medications to assist her control her symptoms. Her mental health concerns were well-publicized, and she even blogged about them. "You are always haunted by the sensation you are squandering your life," says author Chuck Palahniuk in his book Diary, which appears in her page's bio (Nouvelle 1). She had just arrived at the Hotel Cecil in Los Angeles, and one of her most recent posts was from there. She describes landing at Laland and witnessing a "monstrosity" of a structure near the hotel (1) ...

After her roommates complained about Elisa's strange conduct, she was relocated to a separate room (Hsu 4). Elisa Lam has a history of not taking her bipolar meds, according to her relatives. When this happened before, she would hallucinate and seek sanctuary beneath her bed. She was admitted to the hospital at least once while in this condition. Lam feared for her life owing to bipolar-related hallucinations, so she dashed to the roof and took refuge in the water tank (Hsu 6). Lam was unable to exit the water tank and was forced to remove her garments in order to avoid hypothermia or improve her ability to tread water. She drowned and died as a consequently.

Although Elisa Lam's death was officially ruled an accident due to drowning (6) none of the speculations surrounding her death have been verified. As a result, her death remains one of the most perplexing. It adds to the mystery and inspires people to investigate more. The old Hotel Cecil is one of the city's most popular hotels, not because of its grandeur, but because of the "hidden" stories that lie underneath its rooms and environs. Elisa Lam, a twenty-one-year-old university student from Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, went missing in 2013. Her unusual disappearance in 2013 sparked various ideas.

It is unfortunate that Elisa Lam's case was officially declared a drowning accident . Evidences like she was new to the place, she was triying to hide from someone in the elevator, and she did not do any drugs,do not support the theory of accidental drowning. There should have been more investigation and examination of the evidences, and researche on occupants of the hotel to rule out foulplay (Hsu 6) . The argument that Elisa experienced a nervous breakdown that led to her death is not logically appropiate . And it is sad that long nine years have passed , still  one of the most perplexing case in the history of death at the Cecil Hotel remains a mystery, amidst the very novel and sophisticated technologies in criminal investigation.
